Alec Blair lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Almost all of the paintings shown on this website are done on site, en plein air, in the landscapes that are depicted, following some very simple guiding principles. The first, and most important, is co-opted from the writing of historical Canadian artist J.E.H. MacDonald: find a good place to sit. When sketching on site is not possible, or time is limited, drawings with colour notations are used for reference material for studies done back at camp or at home. Finally, some of the oil sketches are used for sources for large canvases back at home.

Alec works as a lecturer in the Geography department at the University of British Columbia teaching courses in the Environment and Sustainability program.

He is the director of the Lawren S. Harris Inventory Project, working with the estate of the artist to put together a catalogue of the artist’s works.
